Surat Diamond House (SDB) is a diamond trade centre located in Surat , India and is the World's largest diamond trading hub . The building is the world's largest office building , ahead of The Pentagon , United States. The SDB project was initiated in 2015 but due to covid - 19 the constructional progress was slowed down which delayed its completion . The entire project was completed in 2022 . The bourse comprises nine towers each with 15 floors , accomodating 4,200 offices ranging from 300 sq. feet to 7500 sq. feet . The building provides facilities such as restaurants , multi purpose hall , retail shops , banks along with different high-tech security . Further , there is a custom house with a national diamond research institute , an international convention centre etc . SDB was designed by the architecture firm Morphogenesis , and the architectural style used was Brutalist.
Looking at the immense potential of the Surat Diamond Industry has inspired the conceptualisation of DREAM city (Diamond Reasearch and Mercantile City ) . With a major objective of prospective improvement in trade facilities of the diamond industry , this project is covered in 683 hectares , on Sachin Magdalla National Highway and is at a distance of 3 km from the airport . The SDB is connected to DREAM city by a number of transportation options , including metro , BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System ) and road . In addition to these transportation , there are plans to build a skywalk that will connect SDB to DREAM City Convention Centre . There is also Khajod - Udhana road which is a six-lane highway which connects SDB to major significant areas in Surat.
India gives shine to 75% of the rough diamonds sold globally . Over 90% of the world's diamond pieces are cut in Surat , contributing about 80% of the Indian annual diamond export . However , previously Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) was serving as a sole diamond hub for India and was located in Mumbai, because of which Diamond merchants from surat had to travel to Mumbai to conduct day to day business which reduced their efficiency and due to such long traveling time the merchants could not spare time for other commitments . Also, while surat is well-known for its diamond manufacturing sector , the city did not have a well-structured trading base . These challenges led various diamantaires to establish a new bourse in Surat , which is now termed as SDB .
Establishing of SDB will have a huge positive impact on export of Indian jewels and diamonds . Let's deep dive into some of the positive changes that this bourse has brought :-
1.The new international diamond bourse will make the diamond exchanges in Mumbai , Israel , Belgium more efficient in terms of scale and activity , enabling the current fragmented diamond trading and polishing industry in India to organise itself in one place .
2. SDB is also set to reduce the traveling time for the merchants and will provide them with affordable office spaces , thus addressing the problem of a majority of small and medium scale traders who can be seen operating their businesses in corridors of BDB .
3. It will also allow merchants to directly deal with the buyers by bringing all activities of cutting , polishing , manufacturing and trading under one head.
4. SDB office spaces can also double as small workshops for cutting and polishing diamonds , and will hence save a lot of time which is spent to traveling to different places to get this done .
5. SDB is also estimated to provide employment to 1.5 lakhs people in different fields related to diamond industry which will have a great positive impact on India's GDP and economy.
In conclusion , it can be rightfully said that Surat Diamond Bourse will showcase the dynamism and growth of Surat's Diamond industry and will also be a testament to India's entrepreneurial spirit . It will serve as a leading contributor in boosting our trade , innovation and collaboration with different nations of the world and simultaneously increase tourism and employment opportunities in the country .
