Can a spiritual congregation influence a nation's economy? The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the world’s largest gathering of humanity, is proving just that. Held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, this sacred event is not only a spiritual milestone attracting over 400 million devotees but also a remarkable economic force driving growth, innovation, and sustainability across various sectors.
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is set to become a major economic driver for Uttar Pradesh. Historical records from the 1882 Kumbh Mela reveal that the event, organised at a cost of Rs 20,228 then, generated Rs 49,840 in revenue, yielding a net profit of Rs 29,612. Building on this tradition of economic impact, Maha Kumbh 2025 is projected to bring in an astounding Rs 25,000 crore, or more, in revenue for the state.
The Maha Kumbh is already providing a substantial boost to tourism, local businesses, and employment. Just the preparations for the Kumbh created jobs for over 45,000 families. The ripple effect extends to nearby destinations like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, and Vindhyavasini Dham, promoting regional tourism.
The Uttar Pradesh government, in collaboration with the Central government, has allocated Rs 6,382 crore for the event, with Rs 5,600 crore designated for infrastructure and related projects. This significant investment, up from Rs 2,406.65 crore in 2019, underscores the scale and ambition of this grand event. This year’s Maha Kumbh spans a staggering 4,000 hectares, featuring 1.5 lakh tents, 30 pontoon bridges, and 400 km of roads. With a budget allocation of ₹7,000 crore, the event has led to transformative infrastructure upgrades, including a six-lane bridge, enhanced rail networks, and solar-powered street lights. Corporate investments exceeding ₹3,000 crore have turned the event into a marketing platform, with brands like Amazon, Flipkart, and Paytm offering unique services while integrating tradition with modernity.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is expected to generate ₹2–4 lakh crore in transactions, contributing over 1% to India’s GDP. Beyond direct economic gains, it has created over six lakh jobs in sectors like construction, transportation, and sanitation. Hospitality, flower trade, and puja items are seeing massive revenue growth, with helicopter services and nearby pilgrimage hubs like Varanasi and Ayodhya also reaping the benefits.

The Mela may generate around Rs 200 crore in business this year, providing temporary livelihoods for small vendors and workers. The CII also says that the festival will create 600,000 jobs. In hospitality alone 250,000 people will receive work through the festival and hundreds of thousands more in tour operations and airlines, local transport and logistics, as formal and informal guides, and in emergency and ancillary support systems. Around 85,000 jobs will come from medical tourism and eco-tourism related to the festival alone.
Mahakumbh 2025 is not just a center of faith and spirituality but also a symbol of India’s cultural and economic strength.” The event will elevate India’s religious economy to a global stage while firmly establishing Uttar Pradesh as a premier destination for religious and cultural tourism.
