Once a promising player in India’s electric vehicle markets, Ola Electric is currently going through a stormy phase due to consistent failures in the stock performances of the firm. Ola went down from an all time high of ₹157.40 to as low as ₹90 at its lowest point in the stock bourses.
One of the major reasons that could have fueled the downfall would be the spat between CEO Bhavish Aggarwal and comedian Kunal Kamra. This recent incident where the CEO accused Kunal Kamra of sharing a paid tweet and said, “I'll even pay more than you earned for this paid tweet or from your failed comedy career” in which the latter was just criticizing the company's service and how it could be dangerous for the daily wage workers who majorly commute by two-wheelers.
Kamra didn’t let Aggarwal’s taunts slide. “Paid tweet, failed comedy career, and sit quietly. Indian businessman at their humble best,” he shot back. After some more back and forth between the two Kamra shifted the focus back to the customers, demanding that Ola provide a “total refund” for anyone looking to return their electric vehicle, particularly those who purchased it in the last four months.
The stand-up comic further challenged Aggarwal to prove his claims about being paid for the tweet. “If you can prove I am paid for the tweet... I'll delete all social media and sit quietly forever,” he said. Where on one side Kamra was asking for accountability, Aggarwal, however, continued to comment about Kamra's comedy career, saying "Comedian ban na sake, chaudhary banne chale….”
This situation only intensified the scrutiny surrounding the company, leading to questions about its practices and future. At the core of Ola Electric's challenges are the countless customer complaints regarding its flagship S1 series e-scooters. Reports indicate that the company receives approximately 80,000 complaints monthly, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction regarding various issues, including malfunctioning hardware, software glitches, and long service delays. Many feel that their grievances are not being adequately addressed, which has led to a growing sense of frustration. This frustration has led OLA to face regulatory repercussions like audits of the company's service centres by the Ministry of Heavy Industries to ensure compliance with government regulations.
The ongoing issues pose a significant risk to Ola Electric's brand image. The perception of low-quality products, inadequate customer service, and trying to suppress the voice of a person who is raising queries could hinder the overall progress of Indian EV manufacturers in the global market.
The company must take decisive action to address these issues, restore consumer trust, and stabilize its financial standing. The fallout from the Kunal Kamra incident has not only illuminated existing problems but also highlighted the critical importance of maintaining quality and accountability in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector.
